a lovely surprise

I was a little blue this morning...I had to get up early, go back to work...all that not so fun stuff. In fact, I had a few tears in my eyes as I was walking to the bus stop. It is hard to leave "home" again.
I had a pain in my knee and hip so I didn't even take the stairs like I normally do so all in all, not a great start to the morning.
Then, as I turned the corner to get to my cubicle, I noticed that it was all decorated. There was tulle draped from the ceiling, those car pom-poms everywhere, confetti on my desk and two congratulations signs. It made me feel so nice.
AND THEN....I was told to come to a "meeting" in the afternoon and it was really a little party for me. With cake, a card and PRESENTS...presents!

I will talk more about last week soon, but I just thought I'd share my wonderful surprise with you all.
If you have pictures, please email them to me...I'd love to see them.

so much to do

can't blog. too busy.
will try my best to fill everyone in as soon as i have the chance....here are a few quick highlights:
-friday, flight cancelled, told we wouldn't get home until tuesday
-maybe we can get you on standby
-no standby but hooray for rescue flights
-night spent at the airport
-rescue flight, 2 hours late
-shower, eat, go to surprise activity
-lots of running around in the amazing race (see H-mo's blog)
-exhausted, go out to party
-dress fitting
-see people
-eat, drink, be merry
-highly anxious state, won't go away
-feeling a bit better today
-hair trial moved
-must. get. everything done.
-all will be well, just relax, it will be fun.

Mostly, I suck at making decisions, which is why things are more stressful than they have to be. But today is a new day and I will remember that it will all be ok.

the great name change debate

Since June, I have been asked the same question over and over again…"so, are you going to change your name?" My answer has pretty much always been "I don’t really know".

I know that for many of you out there, there isn’t a debate at all. You either will or you won’t (or you’ll hyphenate). You know what you would do if you were faced with the situation. You feel strongly one way or the other.

Here’s my problem: I don’t know that I do feel strongly about it at all. I honestly don’t know what my decision is going to be. I have considered just adding a name, but my current name barely fits on forms…adding ANOTHER name (and a 9 letter name at that) seems kind of silly.

Do I drop the last name I’ve always had and add a new one? This would make my first and last name combination just one letter off of the name on his sister’s birth certificate…

Do I just leave it as is? And if I do that, what to do if and when kids enter the picture?

The only thing I know for sure is that professionally and educationally, my name will remain the same- it is the name on my diploma and the name on the publications I have and will have…

It doesn’t seem fair that I have to think about such things while Jordan gets off with no thought about it at all…

So I’m opening it up to you folks…what do you think? What are/were your reasons for changing or staying the same? I’m mostly just curious as to what other people think. If all else fails, perhaps we’ll have a bowl-off.

the bus people, they are crazy

I guess that I am technically "a bus person", but I'm not nearly as werid as the guy that was sitting next to me on the bus home. Perhaps my mistake was taking a different bus home...apparently the people that take the 85 are much stranger than those on my "normal" bus. But he got on the bus, sat next to me, and the crazies began.
There were the random song notes that came out of his mouth (not entire words, just random pitches), the strange hissing noises, the dancing, the gesturing, the leaning... I honestly didn't know how to react. Should I dance right along? Groove to my own music (I was listening to the old i-pod...but it is hard to groove to a slow Joni Mitchell song)?
By the time I got off the bus, I didn't know what was funnier: the guy next to me, or the girl in front of me shooting him the disgusted looks...

spotted yesterday...

...on the streets of Ottawa:
A man in a full length fur coat. Next to him was a man in a fur hat.
Where are we? Moscow?
And more importantly: why oh why didn't I have my camera?

happy birthday!

I'm so confused...the copy I have on my computer has devil horns on it. Why didn't it work??? Anyway, this picture has been titled "creep-o jordan". I hope you have a great day.

only in canada

I figure there are few other places in the world where a girl thinks: "hmmm...my toque and my scarf are aqua, I guess I better find some matching eyeshadow". I'm pretty sure that's what went through the head of a girl I saw on my way to work today. Her eyeshadow matched pretty much perfectly. I wanted to congratulate her...

monday, monday....

Nah nah, nah nah nah naaaah.

All in all, not a bad Monday.
This sure is a strange place though. The temperature was -5 when I left for work this morning, but the windchill translated to "feels like -20". That seems like a crazy difference to me. Maybe I've just been spoiled in my car driving ways...but that just doesn't seem right to me. But really...not a big deal.

But the real news of today was the government business. I felt like a big geek listening to it on the radio, but I just had to. It did have its share of scandals though...a floor crosser, a non-elected cabinet minister, Harper arriving in a minivan...What more could you ask for?

Enjoy the week (just think, in three weeks, I'll be "a wife"...weird).

it's raining....but at least it's not cold

Must. buy. umbrella.

I'm glad it is Friday. As exciting as it was to have things to do this week, I am glad that I now have a break. I managed to take the 7 flights of stairs UP 4 times and the 7 flights of stairs down 5 times. My goal is to take the stairs up once a day and down once a day. Monday didn't count all the way because it was my first day and that's why I took the elevator up. We shall see how long it lasts.

Anyway, I don't have too much today except that I survived my first week quite nicely. I'm sure that the "real" work will start soon and I will be busier than busy can be and will be even more exhausted on Fridays...eek.

Thursday, February 02, 2006

Well, this working thing makes me tired. I'm sure that next week will be easier, but I'm just not used to it yet.

On a happy note...the new season of The Amazing Race starts on February 28th. In my opinion, that will be perfect timing. I'll be going through Olympic withdrawl so I'll need something to take my mind off of it.

I hope you're all having a great week.
I never thought I'd be so excited for a casual Friday in my life, but after a week of having to dress in other pants, I can't wait for my jeans.
